Perhaps Ge Hong would appreciate this given in his days sending and receiving letters took a long time so conversations between scholars had long delays.William Burns 江威廉https://www.blogger.com/profile/09879505383459821332noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4744905985737564278.post-2405699340721870802022-09-02T07:48:55.368-07:002022-09-02T07:48:55.368-07:00This comment has been removed by the author.William Burns 江威廉https://www.blogger.com/profile/09879505383459821332noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4744905985737564278.post-31465636056222953102021-04-20T10:57:23.227-07:002021-04-20T10:57:23.227-07:00I feel quite certain it means the fresh plants, a ...I feel quite certain it means the fresh plants, a bunch or a handful, as this is what you get when you collect the plant for immediate use. It should be young plants, including the leaves and the stems. For dried herbals, most likely they would be cut into pieces and another quantity word, e.g. 两 (grams) would be used.Qi Wanghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09763261935916753811noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4744905985737564278.post-35810716349492335202021-04-20T10:41:29.781-07:002021-04-20T10:41:29.781-07:00This is indeed the first account I ever read tryin...This is indeed the first account I ever read trying to replicate Ge Hong's instructions. Ms. Tu Youyou got inspired and tried a completely different solvent; others feel inspired by Ms. Tu's story of getting inspired. But nobody bothered to give it a try, or do such an experiment, measuring the amount of qinghaosu in such decoction...Qi Wanghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09763261935916753811noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4744905985737564278.post-72465368332445365202011-05-26T13:42:20.950-07:002011-05-26T13:42:20.950-07:00You also need to consider how big a "bunch&qu...You also need to consider how big a "bunch" 握 is - is it a handful of leaves, or is it a bundle of full-length stems, complete with leaves? Second, does Ge Hong say fresh? What if the water is to reconstitute the dried plants and you squeeze the plant juice into the remaining water? Like decocting, but by hand instead of heat.Michael Stanley-Bakerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07696152779126874159noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4744905985737564278.post-43308627065110344682009-07-15T16:39:20.898-07:002009-07-15T16:39:20.898-07:00There would have been very distinct descriptions o...There would have been very distinct descriptions of 虐 at the time. A good place to begin checking is the 諸病源候論, and of course the 千金要方. While these sources are a few hundred years later, they may well cite earlier texts closer to Ge's time.Michael Stanley-Bakerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07696152779126874159noreply@blogger.com
